Sara Calvarese, DVM, Diplomate, ACVO, is a Board-certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist at VEI Upland (formerly known as Veterinary Ophthalmic Consulting).
Dr. Calvarese is originally from Washington, D.C. and attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia where she earned a bachelor degree in Environmental Science. She then earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. Following veterinary school, Dr. Calvarese completed a unique combined academic and private practice medical and surgical internship with Purdue University and a private practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She then completed a three-year private practice ophthalmology residency program in Phoenix, Arizona. After working for a few years as an ophthalmologist in Nevada, she finally made her way to the Inland Empire and has been serving the community in the Upland and surrounding areas for ten years.
Dr. Calvarese has helped to train veterinary students, technicians and fellow veterinarians through externships and continuing education lectures and wet labs. She has published articles in Veterinary Ophthalmology on topics ranging from surgical removal of eyelid and corneo-sclearal masses to studies of pigment distribution in uveal tissues. Her special interests include wildlife and exotic animal ophthalmology, as well as promoting public awareness of veterinary ophthalmology.
In her free time, Dr. Calvarese enjoys spending time with her husband Dr. Douglas Esson and their children, cooking, and getting outdoors whenever possible.
